The Magical Maldives

A favourite destination for honeymooners, but also wonderful for families, the Maldives is a fascinating country, made up of over 1,000 islands. Not all of these are inhabited, and many previously recorded islands have been eroded away by the sea and so no longer exist. Some of the remaining islands are large and spacious, while others are very intimate. There is nowhere else quite like this in the whole world!

Travelling to the Islands

Your choices when travelling directly to the Maldives are limited. You will only find British Airways flights during peak season. The weather is best between October and March, but expect to pay for the privilege. Don’t worry though, as it is very cost effective to fly indirect, with lots of airlines now offering routes to and from the Maldives if you are keen to combine your holiday with another destination, such as Sri Lanka or Dubai.

Island Hopping Adventures

The majority of the islands are accessible by seaplane or speedboat, so don’t feel that you are restricted to one part of the Maldives – there are adventures to be had all over! It is one of the best places to go diving and snorkelling, and many of the hotels offer PADI courses – even children over the age of 10 can give scuba diving a try! It is a truly amazing way to experience just a little bit of the amazing ocean. Other water sports include kayaking, paddle boarding and water skiing.

If you are more into relaxing than swimming, the spa experiences in the Maldives are very special, including the world’s first underwater spa and a strong focus on yoga and meditation. There are glass-bottomed boat trips, fishing trips and dolphin-watching trips, or you might choose to go shopping for some local handmade goods. Perhaps your intention is to spend your entire holiday lying on the white sand of one of the many beaches – and who could blame you?!

Where to Stay

The Maldives is filled with plenty of amazing hotels, beach villas and villas that have been set over the water. We have singled out three of our favourite resorts.

  • Kuramathi is a popular resort that comprises of a number of villas on the beach or over water. Some even come with their own pool and each one is allocated a nearby restaurant. There is the option to upgrade your package to allow you to dine wherever you wish. There are seven bars to choose from, a spa and a kid’s club, as well as an educational Eco Centre.
  • Ozen by Atmosphere in Maadhoo provides high-end villas with amazing facilities including an underwater restaurant! The all-inclusive option is ideal for those on honeymoon and the hotel can organise excursions, diving courses, spa treatments and anything else your heart desires!
  • If you are looking for adults-only accommodation, the Anantara Veli is perfect. It is a little more expensive than other resorts, but the relaxed atmosphere is well worth it. This is ideal for couples who wish to stay in an over-water bungalow, sipping cocktails on the decking.
